The 62 Year History of Culligan of Rockland
In 1950 Al and Bert Herdman, two of Rockland County’s native sons purchased the franchise rights from Culligan International and opened Rockland County’s first water treatment company, A& B Herdman Corp. in Pearl River.
Soft water was first made available through “portable exchange” resin tanks that were rented on a monthly basis.
With the opening of the Tappan Zee Bridge, Culligan soft water service began to expand as families moved from New York City, where the water is naturally soft, to the newly built suburbs in Rockland County and the discovery of “hard water”.
The desire for soft water grew as more homes began using automatic dishwashers and laundry machines. The soap savings alone convinced many people that a “better quality water” pays for itself.
The 1960’s opened with Culligan moving to its present location at 21 First Street in New City. The automatic water softener with its own salt regeneration system became more popular. The business continued to grow as Ken Herdman joined his dad and uncle on the delivery truck and assisted with installations. Ken would spend days installing water softeners and nights meeting with families explaining the many benefits of a Culligan Water Softener.
The 1970s began Ken’s tenure as the owner of the K.T. Herdman Corp. that is better known as Culligan of Rockland. Customers also started asking for a better tasting drinking water and the first Reverse Osmosis drinking water system was introduced to Rockland County by Culligan.
Ken’s daughters joined him in the office in the 1980s as Culligan continued to provide the excellent customer service and quality water improvement products that have become synonymous with the Culligan name. 1980 also was the beginning of a 30-year relationship with Culligan’s Licensed Master Plumber, Mike Zuzolo (RC LIC. # 623).
Through the 1990s Culligan of Rockland was recognized, as one of the top performing independently owned Culligan dealerships in the country. Bottled water became more popular as home and business owners realized they had a choice when it came to drinking better water. Ken’s daughter Christie came to work full-time for Culligan in 1990 and was joined by her husband Jim in 1995.
In June of 2011 Ken decided to become a full-time grand-father and retire from Culligan of Rockland. Christie and Jim have taken over for Ken as he leaves the business after 46 years.
Jim is the most experienced WQA Certified Water Specialist in Rockland County having worked in the industry for 17 years. Jim was recently recognized by Culligan International for his successful career through induction into the Culligan Sales Hall of Fame.
As Culligan of Rockland looks to its 62nd year of operation, Christie and Jim have assembled a team of professionals who strive to provide the best customer service in Rockland County. As new owners, they are dedicated to providing high quality water and even better customer service. As the third generation looks toward the future, Christie & Jim intend to maintain the same philosophy that has made Culligan of Rockland the successful business that it is today.
